DIY Fridge Magnet Cups {Picture Tutorial}

Having all 4 kids home all day we go through lots of cups. It drives me crazy! I’ve tried a few different things to take care of the “cup problem” but nothing has worked…until I saw this idea on Pinterest. I finally got everything gathered this week to make them and it has been awesome, and the kids LOVE them!

Here is what you need:

Round Magnets{I got mine at wal-mart you can find them here}

Cups{I got mine at Target on clearance for $.50}

E6000 Glue

Vinyl Letters {I used my silhouette to cut mine out} or a Sharpie to write your letters

First I applied my vinyl letters to my cups. I cut the vinyl with my Silhouette in each of my kids favorite colors. I didn’t bother with transfer tape since it was one big letter and easy to place on the cup. I used “outdoor grade” vinyl so I can put the cups in the dishwasher. You just have to let the vinyl “cure” for a  few days before you run it through your dishwasher. You could also use a Sharpie to write your kids names on their cups or get different colored cups.

Don’t they look cute?! I used the acknowledgement font for the boys’ cups and can’t remember what I used for the girls’ cups. Sorry!!

Next put some E6000 glue on the back of the magnets. I used this glue because it is permanent and I wanted to be able to put the cups in the dishwasher. If you like hand washing your dishes, you can use a hot glue gun.DSC_3860

Place the magnet on the back of your cup. I held it in place for about a minute to make sure the glue was set with the magnet in the right place.

I let them dry for about an hour before I stuck them on my fridge. {I think I need to clean my fridge, it looks a little dirty!}

My kids were so excited to use them and it has cut down on cup usage so we have a happy mom and happy kids, for just a few dollars!

  1. Marcia Ballard says:

    I don’t like using plastic cups so son has Star Wars Mugs and daughter has princess mugs. No more false blame!

  2. I love this idea. I actually think that, modified, it would even be great for adults having a get together–everyone seems to lose their cups. :)

    I don’t want to be “negative nellie” but I would post one word of caution. Those little magnets can be really dangerous for toddlers. I would be somewhat cautious about using these if someone has children under the age of around 3. Even though the magnets are glued on, they could come lose and fall on the floor, or little ones somehow manage to have superpower strength to pull stuff apart (in this case, magnets off of cups).

  3. Debbie Rioux says:

    The cups are shown on a less steel refrigerator, magnets don’t stick to stainless steel?

  4. Love Love Love this idea!
    Thanks much for sharing!

  5. We just have a cup for each of us (they’re different so we can easily tell whose is whose) and leave them on the counter throughout the day.
