Homemade All Purpose Cleaner With Dawn
I love DIY remedies that save me money! I love my homemade laundry soap and stainless steel cleaner, and they work great. I see no reason to spend tons of money at the store when I can make something myself that works just as good for way cheaper.
I have been looking for a good DIY all-purpose cleaner recipe, but there are a lot of different variations out there! I found a few that I liked and combined them to make this one. I tried it out all weekend and loved it! (I am a big 409 fan and I think this works even better than 409!)
Supplies:
- 2 tsp Borax
- 1 tsp Washing Soda
(NOT baking soda)
- 1/2 cup White Vinegar
- 2 cups hot water
- 1/2 tsp Dish Soap
- empty spray bottle
How to Make the DIY All Purpose Cleaner
Step 1.
I add the Borax
Step 2.
Next, add the 1/2 cup of white vinegar
Step 3.
It foams up a lot, wait till the foam goes down
Step 4.
Then add 1/2 teaspoon of dish soap. I prefer Dawn, but you can use what you have on hand
Step 5.
Finally, add 2 cups of hot water and shake gently to mix it up. It will be a little sudsy.
Testing Out the DIY All Purpose Cleaner
To test out the cleaning power of this homemade all-purpose cleaner, I went to the dirtiest place I could find in my house. This sink is the sink my kids use when they wash their hands after playing outside, and it’s always a mess!

Works like a charm!
Waa-Laa nice and shiny! I also used it on my walls (I wouldn’t use it if you have Flat paint, it will take the paint off!) and under the counter where my kids eat. There was some nice dried on food and all sorts of yucky things…I sprayed it and let it sit for a couple of minutes then just used a wet washcloth to wipe it off and it looks so much better!
I also used it to clean my floorboards under the said counter and they look so much better too!

Ingredients
- 1 tsp. washing soda
- 2 tsp. Borax
- 1/2 cup White Vinegar
- 1/2 tsp. dish soap
- 2 cups hot water
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in an empty spray bottle
- Shake gently to mix
- Clean away!

I make my own also, and I am making my own disinfectant with vinegar and orange rinds. Now I starting something to add to my cleaner recipe….I am adding the homemade disinfectant in lieu of the plain vinegar. WOW! Who would have known the difference it would make, and the citrus scent to boot! Just thought I would pass along!

I love this! I have all of this on hand b/c it’s what I use to make my own laundry deteregent as well.. I make it by the 5 gallon bucket and since it’s all stain removers, there’s never a problem getting all the grass and dirt stains out of the kids clothes! Will definitely be making the cleaners today since I haven’t found any deals I like on cleaning products in a few weeks..
We’re switching to less chemicals. I took 3 cups of orange, lemon, and lime peels, and put them in a mason jar. Top with vinegar, let sit for two weeks. Works wonderful! The vinegar smell leaves when it dries.
Could I try this with the paper towels cut in half and use as disposable as opposed to spray?

I have borax and washing soda on hand from making my laundry soap, so this was great! I made the mixture in an empty wipes container and used my husbands old t-shirts which I cut into squares and it was perfect! He’s a bit of a T-shirt hoarder so right now I’m using and throwing away. Love this recipe! Thanks so much!
I am wondering if you have a wood cleaner recipe? Like the pledge wipes? I have an old wooden table and dont dare use harsh chemicals on it! any tips?

I’ve already made laundry detergent with washing soda, baking soda, borax and fels naphtha. Do you think I could use some of this mixed with the vinegar and water? Any idea on measurements?
I wouldn’t use it with the fels naphtha, which is more of the stain remover component of the laundry detergent. I’ve put some baking soda in my all purpose cleaner before though. If you have all the stuff for the cleaner, I don’t think you need to add extra ingredients just because you have them. Just makes it less cost effective. 🙂
Thanks Cathy. I just made the laundry detergent last week and wanted to avoid purchasing the ingredients again just to use a few tablespoons of each to make the all purpose cleaner. Before receiving your response, I did try a little of my DIY laundry detergent mixed with the vinegar and water, and the fels naptha did not dilute, even in hot water. Hmmmm . . . . I’m beginning to question if I even want that stuff in my house!
Oh how interesting! That’s crazy! Were you able to make a batch of the regular cleaner? If so, how is it working for you?
Vinegar and/or lemon juice cancel out the soap in any recipe. Best is to use a soap based product followed by a rinse with a vinegar based spray.
That’s why when you want to add vinegar to the laundry, it is added during the *rinse* cycle. I don’t mean to stir up old news, but I wish I had realized that bit of info many bottles sooner than I did. Happy cleaning!
