The Olympics are starting this week and I feel like my children and I are really disconnected from it all. So I have planned some activities to help them learn about the Olympics and get excited about it.

Food for the Olympics:

You have to kick of the Opening Ceremonies with some fun food. Here is a fun idea that Ang came up with for the 2012 Olympics in London. Silly country themed food. Now I realize that most of these are not traditional foods for these countries. But they are some fun tie ins that your kids are sure to love!

  • All AMERICAN  Hot Dogs
  • ITALIAN Pasta {Pasta Roni, from our stockpile}
  • CHINESE Salad {Green Salad with Asian Dressing, we got FREE}
  • FRENCH Fries {My kids prefer tater tots!} {Don’t you love the glass stands? I made them to use at a friends wedding and use them for everything!}
  • SPANISH Salsa & Chips {Pace, from our stockpile}
  • GERMAN {Root} Beer
  • And for dessert an OLYMPIC TORCH. {Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes}

How to Make Olympic Torch Cupcakes:

To make Olympic Torch cupcakes:

Ingredients:

1 cake mix
2-3 eggs
oil
water
large marshmallows
m&m’s

Instructions:

  1. Make cake mix according to box instructions.
  2. Place your ice cream cones in cup cake pan. (this will give them a little more stability).
  3. Fill Ice Cream cones just below the ring line with cake batter. I use a 1/2 cup measuring cup for easier pouring.
  4. Cook according to box cupcake instructions.
  5. When the timer goes off put a marshmallow on the top instead of frosting  cook for another few minutes or until lightly browned.
  6. Use M&M’s to make the Olympic rings and then light a candle for the torch flame.
  7. Frosting can be used if you prefer frosting instead of a marshmallow.

Olympic Movies You can Watch:

A few weeks ago I showed my boys the movie, “Cool Runnings”. Now they are really excited to see bobsledding at the Olympics. There are several great movies that can get you and your family in the Olympic spirit.

  • Cool Runnings  Get the DVD
  • Cool Runnings Watch the instant video
  • This is a really funny Disney movie about a Jamaican bobsled team. I loved this movie when I was a kid and I still love it now.

  • The Cutting Edge only $5.49 on DVD
  • The Cutting Edge Check out the remakes
  • An Olympic romance that matches a hockey player and an ice skater together to win gold.

Plus you can reminisce on Olympics past with these Olympics highlight DVDs

Winter Olympic Schedule and Activity:

Print this Olympic schedule and share it with your kids. Have them pick out a sport that they want to watch each day. On a chain link have them write the name of the sport that want to watch. You can even write the time that it will be on if you are really on the ball. Each day take off a link and watch a family members favorite event as you count down to the closing ceremonies.
