Alfredo metaball subs recipe

Easy Meatball Sub Sandwich Recipe

Whip up some satisfying meatballs sub sandwiches for dinner tonight! You can make all of it or none of it from scratch. Up to you! I usually choose to do some homemade elements and can still have this dinner on the table in less than 30 minutes.

By the way, have you tried meatball subs with alfredo sauce? I love it! But then again, Alfredo is one of my favorite sauces, so I’m not really surprised.

Meatball Sub Sandwich Ingredients

I prefer to get store-bought buns for the subs, just for the sake of time and ease. But I’m sure a homemade French bread, homemade bun recipe, or roll recipe would make for some amazing subs!

Also, the meatballs are the frozen ones from Costco, which I do kind of love because they are convenient and tasty. Honestly, sometimes frozen meatballs cost less per pound than the plain ground beef you need to make them from scratch. I’m a fan of saving time and money.

We have shared some great meatball recipes though and they do freeze very well, so go ahead and make some if you want to! For these alfredo and/or marinara meatball subs, just try to choose a meatball with a flavor that will go well with the sauce.

Homemade Alfredo & Marinara Sauce

What I do make from scratch are the alfredo and marinara sauce. It is super easy and super delicious, especially the alfredo. 😉

Simple Marinara Sauce Recipe

  • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Combine the sauce ingredients in a medium saucepan and bring to a low simmer. Simmer for 10-15 minutes on low.

I am sharing one of my favorite alfredo sauce recipes below (in the recipe instructions), but we have shared some great alfredo sauce recipes in the past too that you can check out:

Baking the Meatball Sub Sandwiches

Preheat your oven and place your bread on a rimmed baking sheet before you assemble the sandwiches because we are going to toast those buns and melt that cheese!

After you’ve toasted them for 4-5 minutes you can take them out, assemble, and serve! Enjoy!

Ingredients

Alfredo Sauce

Meatball Subs

  • 20 meatballs bake and keep warm
  • 5 sandwich buns
  • 5 slices Provolone or Mozzarella cheese

Instructions

For the Alfredo sauce:

  • In a medium pot or skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook for about 2 minutes, stirring constantly, taking care not to let the garlic burn. Add the cream cheese, stirring with a whisk until the mixture is smooth, 2-3 minutes. It should come together to form a smooth, creamy paste.
  • Add the milk gradually, about 1/4 cup at a time, whisking quickly and constantly until each addition is incorporated fully into the sauce. Stir in the Parmesan cheese, pepper, and salt. Stir until the cheese is melted and the sauce is the desired consistency.
  • Cook for 2-3 minutes for a thicker sauce or remove right after the cheese is melted for a thinner sauce. Yields about 2 cups of sauce. Keep warm.

To assemble the sub:

  • Preheat oven to 400°F/200°C. Slice the buns in half and lay them face-up on a rimmed baking sheet. Place 3-4 warm meatballs on each bottom half of the buns and top with desired amount of warm sauce, then add sliced cheese. Toast in the oven for 4-5 minutes at 400°F/200°C until the buns are toasted and cheese is melted. Serve.
