My mom would make these during the holidays for me because I love them! Now that I don’t live nearby, I have to make them for myself.
Anyway, they are not too sweet, but just sweet enough that I want to eat them all day long…which is basically what I’ve been doing the last few days.
Sour Cream Sugar Twists
- 1 Tbsp yeast
- ¼ c warm water
- 3 ½ c flour
- 1 ½ tsp salt
- ½ c butter
- ½ c shortening
- 2 eggs
- ½ c sour cream
- 1 tsp vanilla
Sugar filling:
- 1 ½ c sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla
Soften yeast in warm water. Sift together flour & salt into large mixing bowl. (I don’t have a sifter, so I just whisk it together in the bowl.) Use a pastry blender/cutter to cut in butter & shortening until particles are fine. Blend in eggs, sour cream, vanilla, and softened yeast. Mix thoroughly.
Cover and chill at least 2 hours.
Combine sugar filling. Roll out half of dough on surface sprinkled with sugar filling. Roll out to about 16”x8”. Sprinkle more sugar filling on top. Fold one end of dough over center. Fold the other end over to make three layers (like folding a letter). Repeat rolling out and folding process. Roll out to ¼” thick. Cut into 4”x1” strips (I use a pizza wheel/cutter). Twist and place on cookie sheet (I recommend using a Silpat mat on the cookie sheet).
Bake at 350 for 15 minutes. Makes about 3 dozen.

OMG! My grandma used to make these! These are famous in our family! we call them starlight sugar crisps but i’ve never seen anyone else make them! YAY! they’re so delish nuked in the microwave for 10-20 seconds.
I haven’t seen anyone else make them either! That’s one of the reasons why I thought I definitely needed to share this recipe. It is fun to hear that other families love them too!
Hey, me too. We call them Vanilla Sugar Twists. I was so surprised to see them in the picture. Delish!! I love these guys
