As The Trowel Turns…

This years garden is finally coming along… The harvest schedule is about 2-3 weeks behind previous years due to the wet Spring we had in the Seattle Area.  I don’t mind the delay, as long I’m still able to pick my baskets of fresh home grown produce every other day. :)

I am currently swimming in Strawberries…  So far we’ve made Chocolate Dipped Strawberries, Strawberry Shortcake, and Strawberry and pudding cake (be on the lookout for that recipe this Sunday).  I think strawberry jam might be on the radar for this weekend.

I’m also enjoying  Sugar Snap Peas & Snow Peas…  Besides eating them raw out of the garden, we are enjoying them in Stir-Fry.

But the garden veggie I’m most anxiously for … Green Beans… And lot’s of them!  Let’s hope it’s a bumper crop this year. :)

How about YOU?  What are you patiently waiting for?

  1. I’m growing peas for the first time this year- what type of support to they need? i saw you had a black triangular support……?
Thanks! jealous of those perfect strawberries!

    • Since I tend to grow “pole” peas I use a 5′ tri-legged trellis I purchased at the Farmer’s Market about 10 years ago. You can typically find inexpensive trellis at Fred Meyer or Home Depot. :)

Went out to water the garden last night…and noticed my dog made a nice comfy bed in my basil… :0(

You’re making me jealous. Especially of the strawberries. Maybe you should come do a garden for me.

  4. Mavis, what can I do about bugs eating my green bean leaves? they are preventing them from growing well. i am getting a pint of strawberries each day, which is wonderful! Would love to see your cake recipe so we can do it ourselves.

    • Lot’s of people have suggested using a spray bottle filled with dish soap and water on the leaves to keep the bugs away…

  5. indirectly related–I live in south Meridian. If anyone has use for some lavender, stop by & get some to dry or whatever (will get a f/u comment thru here)

  6. Mavis, strawberry freezer jam is awesome and super easy! Also, there are coupons for Ball pectin $1/1 in the 6/26 SS I believe, and also some coming up in this Sunday’s paper. Would be great to double this weekend too!

    • By the way, I saw the Ball pectin on sale at Albie’s last week 2 for $9. Not sure if it is still on sale…..
