One of my favorite things I look forward to this time of year is dessert… With all the fresh fruit ripening over the next few months…I’ve found it’s best to have a plan of action.
Here’s my current plan. Step #1 Pick as many ripe strawberries as I can find. Step #2 Sneak them into the house undetected.
Step #3 Bake up a batch of scones and feed my family strawberry shortcake for dinner.
Yum! Want to know the best part about serving dessert for dinner? No complaints… everyone clears their plate and they even ask for seconds. Now all I need to do is find a few more berry recipes to turn the next harvest into dinner again. I’m thinking this book should come in handy.

How about YOU? Do you have a great berry recipe I should try?

It all began on October 8th, 2008. Cathy and Monica started this coupon blog to help friends and family learn about their new money saving hobby couponing! Since then they have taught thousands of women (and men)

Your garden must be awesome! Most of my produce doesn’t even make it to the house – my son and husband think the berry patch is theirs for free for all snacking when the mood hits!
My 2 yr old granddaughter is the same…I couldn’t figure out why her feety pjs were dirty every morning…turns out she was scouting for strawberries before anyone else was up. My husband was so charmed that he “salted” the patch….he actually BOUGHT strawberries and left hem out there for her to find!
That is way to cute! I’m getting a giggle over your husband hiding strawberries for her to find!
When my son was 18m he would stand at the back door and say “open – snack?” I’d open the door and he’d trot over to the strawberry and raspberry bushes and help himself. Nothings really changed except that he’s a few years older now and can open the door for himself!
That is adorable!!!!!!
If we had strawberries, I know our 2 yr old would be doing the same thing!!!!
Thanks for the story~ That was so cute!!!
I love how everything is so green over there in your area!! Idaho, Boise area, drys out so fast! Love to see others our age who are big gardeners and cooks! Thanks for sharing and inspiring!
Do you have any suggestions for keeping bugs/critters from eating your strawberries? I have slug bait all around the garden but something ate my first strawberry.
I have had a problem with birds in the past. Now I keep a plastic netting over the berries. It resembles chicken wire, but is lightweight and plastic. It keeps the birds out, if that may be your culprit.
I can’t believe the problems I’m having with garden predators this year. Something is eating the seeds & new sprouted growth. It kills me to find new sprouts lying on top of the bed root and all not even eaten just pulled up. Must not be tasty enough. I planted 150 corn seeds and only two sprouted. I figure thats from birds but I don’t know what is eating/pulling up the seedlings. Sometimes I find my garden markers pulled out as well. One day I’ll have a lush garden but for now its just mainly dirt. Maybe I should start a women’s mud wrestling team
I know several people in my area, including me, that have been losing sprouts. I know bugs are more of a problem for me, too! One of my friends swears it’s birds nipping off the new growth, or pulling out the sprouts. Very frustrating to put in all that work and then have nothing to show for it! At least we know we’re not alone.
Crows yank out the new sprouts and leave them there! We had a BIG problem with that. Hubby had to put netting on the top of the fenced area to keep them out. We put up a fence (just around the garden area) to keep the deer and rabbits out!!
Thanks for all your suggestions!
I might try some type of netting over them or move them to a planter on the deck (we only have four of them).
The birds eat mine all the time. If you pick the strawberries when they start turning ripe (before fully pink) and let them ripen in the house it solves most of the bird problems.
You look all Martha Stewarty in that pic! I can not believe your yard looks like that! Sweetness!
I’m eying that hammock…..
By the way, don’t forget strawberry-rhubarb pie…it’s the bomb! Shout out if you want the recipe!
I want the recipe
could you post the recipe please?
Pavlova

I just put the link to where I found this recipe to give proper credit and because the instructions would be a little long. I love to make this dessert. The pavlova is really sweet so it is really good with tart raspberries. We grow yellow and red.
Our favorite way to eat strawberries is this:
*Wash strawberries and hull.
*Dip in sour cream.
*Then dip in brown sugar.
Divine!
We like to eat merengue shells with strawberries or raspberries and whipped cream. We also like merengue shells just plain without anything on them.
